February 25th, 2010Gluten-Free RecipesWhy does smell play such a strong role in recalling a memory? as most of us have experienced, a smell can bring on a flood of memories, influence moods and powerful responses. That said – when I smell oatmeal cookies baking I am immediately brought back to the kitchen table of my youth, waiting expectantly in our warm, cozy (green and orange floral!) kitchen, for my mom’s oatmeal chocolate chip raisin cookies to come out of the oven.

February 15th, 2010Gluten-Free RecipesChocolate pudding cake is – well – a heavenly, rich, chocolaty experience and if you haven’t already tried it get into your kitchen right now and put on your apron! And yes, this gluten-free recipe happens to be a favorite. It’s very simple to bake (and even simpler to eat) and comes out of the oven oozing with chocolate pudding. Eat it while it’s warm.

December 22nd, 2009Gluten-Free HealthAnyone out there enjoy crunching on ice? I remember as teenager I liked to do that. I think it was the sound it made that appealed to me in some inexplicable way. I also liked the cool sensation going down my throat. But after a few months of it I gave it up. A friend told me that it was very bad for my teeth. I recently read that there are people who are unable to give up the ice-crunching habit. They are simply addicted to it. It has caused teeth and jaw problems, but they relent. If you know someone like that, take her or him to get blood tests. This is one of the classic symptoms of anemia. And anemia can be caused by celiac disease.

December 16th, 2009Hot TopicsI received so many responses from my last post about veganism and celiac disease that I have decided to dedicate this post to that issue. Veganism is a form of vegetarianism in which a person decides to stay away from all animals and animal products. So meat, poultry, fish, as well as eggs, milk, fur, leather, wool and silk are off limits to a vegan. There are many good reasons to adopt this lifestyle.

December 13th, 2009Hot TopicsI was sitting in the waiting room of my doctor’s office with my three year old in tow, when the woman sitting next to me turned and asked me a strange question:
“What do you make for dinner?”

September 29th, 2009Gluten-Free HealthIf you haven’t yet read Peter Green’s Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic go to Barnes and Noble today and purchase a copy. It’s really a fantastic book to read at every stage of your diagnosis. Dr. Green explains the disease clearly without talking down to his readers. He also has good advice for people who are just starting on their glorious journey toward gluten free eating.

September 22nd, 2009Gluten-Free RecipesYou think staying gluten-free is tough? I was recently put on a diet that is actually more difficult than the celiac diet (can you believe that is possible?). Eventually I was diagnosed with a parasite, but before that helpful diagnosis was made, the doctor told me to stick with just plain bread and cooked vegetables (I think I would have preferred the celiac diet). Anyway, in my search for some good recipes for cooked veggies I found this great vegetable soup recipe.

August 29th, 2009Gluten-free activismA number of people have contacted us about how they can participate and assist in putting together a really unique, helpful, gluten-free site that will be a resource for the entire gluten-free community. So I have been giving this some thought, as my husband begins researching products and services we can offer.
